From your headlights to your tail lights there are many different lights on your car that are critical for your safety. They indicate your intentions to other drivers. And they allow you to see ahead and behind you at night. If any of them are not working your safety could be in jeopardy. It is way less traumatic for use to regularly check for and replace burned out bulbs that for a police officer to pull you over and give you the bad news and a ticket.
Your headlights have an additional problem besides burning out. Plastic headlight lenses are the norm in the automotive industry now – every car has them. Some have fancy names like plexan and Lexan, but they all have the same problems. The sun, acid rain, harsh weather conditions, chemicals (brake fluid, power steering fluid, hot radiator fluids, hot water, harsh cleaners, etc…) will all cause the plastic lenses to degrade and weaken quickly. Some manufacturers have gone to including a protective film on the lenses. Regardless, they are all susceptible to this weakening and yellowing over time.. When that happens, they need to be replaced otherwise you will see less and less of what’s in front of you which is a safety issue.
